Chiropractic for Neck Pain

Neck pain from posture, strain, or whiplash is commonly treated with chiropractic care.

What to expect

Assessment of range of motion, manual therapy or mobilization, and exercises. Many chiropractors offer gentler mobilization as an alternative to high-velocity neck manipulation, especially if you have concerns about the latter.

What the evidence says

Evidence supports manipulation and mobilization for short-term relief of mechanical neck pain, usually alongside exercise. One safety note worth understanding: high-velocity neck (cervical) manipulation has a long-debated, rare statistical association with cervical artery dissection and stroke. Serious events are estimated at roughly 1–3 per 100,000 manipulations, and whether the manipulation causes the dissection or people with an early dissection seek care for the resulting neck pain remains scientifically unsettled. It is reasonable to ask your chiropractor about gentler mobilization techniques.

When to see a physician

Seek urgent care for neck pain with severe or unusual headache, dizziness, slurred speech, facial or arm weakness, or vision changes — especially soon after a neck manipulation — and for any symptoms after significant trauma.
